When Was Pickleball Invented?

Pickleball’s rise in popularity might seem recent, but its roots trace back several decades. Understanding when and how this sport was invented offers a glimpse into its enduring appeal and how it has evolved over time.

The Birth of Pickleball

The year was 1965, and the place was Bainbridge Island, Washington. Joel Pritchard, a congressman, and his friend Bill Bell, a successful businessman, were looking for a way to entertain their bored families during the summer. With a badminton court but no shuttlecock in sight, they improvised by using a perforated plastic ball and paddles made from plywood.

Initial Gameplay

The initial game was a hodgepodge of rules borrowed from various sports. The net was set at badminton height, and the players used wooden paddles to hit the ball. Over time, they lowered the net and adjusted the rules to make the game more dynamic and engaging.

Involvement of Barney McCallum

Shortly after the game’s inception, Barney McCallum was introduced to the game. He was instrumental in refining the rules and formalizing the sport. McCallum helped standardize the equipment and established the first official rules, which have evolved but still form the basis of today’s game.

Growth and Spread

From its humble beginnings on Bainbridge Island, pickleball slowly started to spread. The inventors built the first permanent pickleball court in the backyard of Joel Pritchard’s neighbor in 1967. The game’s popularity grew through word of mouth and by the 1970s, pickleball had spread to other parts of Washington State and beyond.

Key Milestones

  1. Formation of USAPA: The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was established in 1984 to promote the sport and establish standardized rules.

  2. First Tournament: The first known pickleball tournament was held in 1976 at South Center Athletic Club in Tukwila, Washington.

  3. Modern Era: The 2000s saw an exponential increase in pickleball’s popularity, with dedicated courts being built across the U.S. and international interest growing.

From its invention in 1965 by three innovative dads on Bainbridge Island to its current status as a beloved sport worldwide, pickleball has come a long way. The game's evolution from a backyard pastime to a globally recognized sport is a testament to its enduring appeal and the passion of its community.
