What's Pickleball?

Pickleball is a sport that has captured the hearts of people worldwide, thanks to its unique blend of fun, fitness, and accessibility. If you're new to pickleball, you might be wondering what exactly this game entails. In this blog, we'll provide a comprehensive overview of pickleball, including its rules, equipment, and why it's become such a popular activity.

The Basics of Pickleball

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a court similar in size to a badminton court, with a net slightly lower than a tennis net. The game can be played as singles or doubles, with doubles being the more common format.

Court and Equipment

  • Court Dimensions: A standard pickleball court measures 20 feet by 44 feet for both singles and doubles play. The net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches high in the middle.

  • Paddles: Players use paddles made of wood, composite, or graphite. These paddles are larger than ping-pong paddles but smaller than tennis racquets.

  • Ball: The game is played with a perforated plastic ball, similar to a wiffle ball, which comes in different colors and variations for indoor and outdoor play.

Rules of the Game

Serving

  • Underhand Serve: The serve must be made underhand with the paddle below the waist.

  • Diagonal Serve: The serve must be directed diagonally across the net to the opponent's service court.

  • One Attempt: Players are allowed only one serve attempt, unlike in tennis where two serves are allowed.

Scoring

  • Points: Points can only be scored by the serving team.

  • Game to 11: Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by 2 points.

  • Rally Scoring: Some variations and casual play may use rally scoring, where points can be scored by either team regardless of who serves.

The Double-Bounce Rule

After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it, and the serving team must let the return bounce once before hitting it. After these two bounces, the ball can be volleyed or played off the bounce.

Non-Volley Zone (The Kitchen)

The area within 7 feet of the net on both sides is known as the non-volley zone, or the kitchen. Players cannot volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in this zone. This rule prevents aggressive net play and promotes longer rallies.
